The origin of the residences' names

The Cretan mythology claims the origins of the goddess Athena to be in Crete. The Cretan Athena (or Athina), which appears to be related with the Minoan "Snake Goddess", was born near the river Triton and gave the sacred olive tree to the Minoan people. Ancient clay tables of the syllabic script Linear B found in Knossos Palace refer to the connection of Athena with the pre-historic religion of Crete. Also, archaeological researches and findings (clay tables, ancient jars, remains of ancient olive oil extraction facilities) indicate that olive oil production was very important for the economy and society of the Minoan people that it was exported to the other Aegean islands and central Greece.

According to the archaeologist N. Platon, the myth of the three sisters, Elais, Spermo and Oino (Oeno), whose names were connected with the three basic products of Greece (olive oil, grain, wine), starts from the Minoan Crete. Elais, Spermo and Oino were the daughters of Anius who was son of Dionysus and Ariadne. Where the offsprings of king Minos left Crete to inhabit other islands and areas of the Aegean Sea, Anius went to the sacred island of Delos, married Dorippe and had three daughters known as the "Oenotropae." Their grandfather Dionysus gave the three sisters a unique gift: "To create from earth oil, grain and wine." The Oenotropae provided the people going to the Sibyl of Delos with plentiful food and fruits. Spermo would offer fruit, grains and cereal, Elais would offer as much olive oil as they wanted and Oino (Oeno) would provide them with wine.

In Greek mythology, Dimitra is the goddess of the harvest, who presided over grains, the fertility of the earth and the seasons. Her common surnames are Sito (σίτος: wheat) as the giver of food or corn/grain and Thesmophoros (θεσμός, thesmos: divine order, unwritten law) as a mark of the civilized existence of agricultural society. Though Dimitra is often described simply as the goddess of the harvest, she presided also over the sanctity of marriage, the sacred law, and the cycle of life and death.
